Community Meeting

Dear McKinley Tech Parents,
I am writing to ask that you come out and speak at a community meeting next Wednesday, February 22nd, at Brookland Middle School from 6:30 to 8:30pm. The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) has released a proposal for school accountability and it has scheduled community meetings to discuss the proposal.
The current proposal would have 50% of a high school’s rating be based on its test scores. Though OSSE has proposed that elementary schools and middle schools get credit for both student proficiency – or grade-level test scores – and for growth on test scores, OSSE’s proposal only gives high schools credit for proficiency – or grade-level achievement.
In the last rating of test score growth among high schools, McKinley Tech had the highest growth score of any DCPS high school (see the Urban Institute article below). It’s “typical” student grew more than 74% of comparable students city-wide.
OSSE has stated that it wants a single report for accountability and for the school report card that parents use to choose to select schools. I worry that by excluding growth data on its report for high schools, potential McKinley Tech parents would not be able to properly assess the quality of education that McKinley Tech offers. Since this is an accountability measure, excluding this data could also lead to us being penalized as a school.
If you have thoughts on this topic, please come to next Wednesday’s community meeting.
